I’m Mariah Darling, and I’m running for city councillor in Ward 3 because Saint John is my home, and I care deeply about our community. I’ve spent years listening, learning from others, and working to support the people around me. Now, I’m ready to bring that same energy to City Council to make sure everyone’s voice is heard. Together, we can make Ward 3 a place where everyone feels welcome, heard, and proud to call home.
Why I’m Running
I’ve been honoured to serve Ward 3 for the past year and a half. Like any role, there are moments I’m proud of — and areas where I want to grow. What hasn’t changed is why I’m here: to bring a vital, grounded perspective to the council table.
One of the biggest things I’ve realized on council: too many people in leadership don’t truly understand what it’s like to live an average life in Saint John.
For many residents, life isn’t about planning the next investment or vacation. It’s about making it through the week:
finding affordable groceries
managing bills when unexpected costs come up
navigating healthcare without coverage
Even a sore tooth can become overwhelming when care isn’t affordable. That common reality deserves representation.
What I Bring to Council.
I’m not building a career in politics — I’m here to serve my community. Being a councillor isn’t about speeches — it’s about the work behind the scenes. My background in science and research has given me strong skills in:
reading and understanding complex reports quickly
breaking down dense information
spotting gaps and asking the right questions
Council packages regularly exceed 100 pages. Showing up prepared isn’t optional — it’s essential. I take that seriously.
Just as important is how we treat people. I believe in:
listening as much as speaking
staying respectful, even in tough conversations
being honest about what I don’t know and ready to learn
Too often, I’ve seen the opposite — performative speeches, disengagement, and behaviour that shuts people down instead of bringing them in. We can do better.
Why Representation Matters.
It hasn’t always been easy being the person on council representing financial reality.
I’ve had to explain that people don’t avoid the dentist out of fear — but because they can’t afford care.
I’ve seen rental units in unacceptable conditions — including homes with holes in the floor.
I’ve personally felt the stress of covering basic campaign costs.
That perspective matters. A strong council should reflect the full community, not just property owners, business leaders, or those with financial security. We need a table that includes a range of lived experiences.
Looking Forward
For too long, politics in Saint John has been about helping individuals navigate broken systems — bending rules instead of fixing them.
It’s time to build a city that works for everyone. A city where people can thrive, not just survive.
We need a council ready to focus, collaborate, and do the work. I’m ready to be part of that team.
